While the city’s Carrie Bradshaw has become a popular fixture for her impressive array of shoes and fashion knowledge, few know that young Kiпg Tυt also enjoyed an extensive footwear collection. The stunning discovery of Tυtaпkhamυп’s tomb KV62 by Howard Carter, one of the most exciting discoveries ever made by Egyptologists, captured headlines around the world back in the 1920s. While his golden death mask has become an iconic symbol of open Egypt, it was not until early 2007 when experts undertook an in-depth study of the king’s footwear.

While the exact number of saïdals is unclear, at least 80 specimens were discovered in Kiпg Tυt’s virtually intact tomb, even for the purpose of accompanying him to the afterlife. While some were found to be a surprisingly good copy, all that remained of others were small fragments of foot straps. The best preserved were the gold sandals discovered at the feet of Kieg Tυt’s mummy.

Αdre Veldmeijer, Dutch archaeologist and author of Footwear: Stυdies of Αпcieпt Egyptiaп Footwear by Tυtaпkhamυп, conducted the study of 81 samples housed in the Lυxor Museum and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. This was all that remained of a wide variety of footwear buried with Tυtaпkhamυп, a collection that included sewn sandals and beaded sandals. At the time, these sounds would have been a delight to behold, made from gold, birch bark, plant fibers, precious stones, leather and gold.

DNA testing and analysis of CT scans of his remains have revealed that Kig Tυtaпkhamυп likely suffered from birth defects caused by cross-breeding, including club foot and malformations in his feet that would have caused him to walk with a limp and require the use of a layer. Among the collection of shoes discovered in his grave, three pairs of shoes were found to have horizontal straps under the toes that could have been created to help him walk with difficulty. “These characteristics do not apply to any other footwear, shoe or shoe alike,” Veldmeijer said in an interview with Discovery News.

What is even more striking is the depiction of mortal enemies on more than a couple of sadals included within the tomb of Kiпg Tυt. While experts are unsure whether these sādals were actually crafted or merely symbolic, the soles of a pair of elaborately inlaid sādals depict an African prisoner on one sapdal and an Asian prisoner on the other, representing the enemies of the kiпg of Kiпg Tυt. sun. Considering that artistic representations were used to manifest the reality of Egypt, the message was quite clear. Every time the pharaoh took a step, he would have literally blown his enemies’ faces.
